![DPDP Act 2023_ Data Protection Guide](https://forums.cybrary.it/uploads/default/original/3X/9/4/94fede91aa746ac85316302d9d8feef9b1020e62.jpeg)

India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the DPDP Rules, 2025, have increased the importance of protecting personal data.

But data protection is not just about privacy policies and user consent. The security of the applications, APIs, databases and cloud infrastructure processing personal information matters too.

Here are five areas organisations should pay attention to:

**1. Application Security**

Web applications should be tested for vulnerabilities that could expose personal information.

**2. API Security**

Weak authentication, broken access controls and insecure API endpoints can create opportunities for unauthorised data access.

**3. Cloud Security**

Misconfigured storage, excessive permissions and inadequate monitoring can increase data exposure risks.

**4. Access Management**

Organisations should review user privileges, authentication mechanisms and access to sensitive information.

**5. Incident Response**

A documented process for identifying, investigating and responding to data breaches is essential.

### A question for cybersecurity professionals

When assessing an organisation’s data protection readiness, which technical area do you consider the most overlooked: API security, cloud configuration, access management or incident response?

I’d be interested in hearing practical experiences from security engineers, penetration testers and IT professionals.
