AWS Certified Cloud Practioner - Virtualization vs Rapid Elasticity Concept

I hope this is a good forum to present this and hear anyones take on this question from a practice test I am using:

Question 5: In a traditional data center, if you needed to add storage beyond what you already had connected to a server, you would need to buy or move hardware to expand. What key concept of cloud computing enables resources to be added without needing to add more hardware?

A. Virtualization
B. Metered service
C. On-demand self-service
D. Rapid elasticity

I have put Answer: D. Rapid elasticity. Rapid elasticity is a key concept of cloud computing that allows resources to be scaled up or down dynamically to meet demand without needing to provision or add physical hardware. This enables flexibility and scalability, which are fundamental advantages of the cloud.

But the authors say that it is A. Virtualization is correct, because it allows a large pool of hardware, storage, or netowrk resources to be allocated to systems and services that are hosted on it withough needing those systems to add more h/w to meet new demands.

my counter to that is that Virtualization is less correct choice. While virtualization is a core technology that enables cloud computing, it does not directly address the ability to dynamically scale resources without additional hardware.

What are your thoughts?

I definitely see your point, but if I’m trying to get inside the authors’ heads, I think the key here is the contrast being drawn to hardware - virtualization is more evenly sized, categorically, as a counterpoint to hardware (ie virtualization vs. hardware) than rapid elasticity.

Additionally, rapid elasticity is not an enabling solution in itself, but a feature that’s made possible by virtualization.

I think the authors are being intentionally tricky here, but I can see their rationale.

I reckon that being tricky, though, I’m starting to think that this is going to come down to What the authors of the AWS questions think. I do see how in this case the author is mapping and correlating hardware to price. However, the Cloud operators like AWS also have to “buy” more h/w as the workloads increases. Most enterprises that are not cloud native, do have virtualization in place, and plan for capaciy growth. So I’m still contrarian to the answer from the author, since it is the automation which in this case would be the elasticity, beyond pure h/w virtualization that allows for rapid elasticity and scaling. I guess, also the fact that they say Server, as opposed to a VM may in some inadequate way suggest that the “traditional data certer” would not have a VM farm.

anyways, it is 2 for 2 right now…My coworker and me voted for Rapid Elasticity, and you and the author (let the number of authors be 1) leaned towards Virtualization.
