Happy Monday Cybrary!!
Just got my license renewed! Time to grind even harder than last semester! >:3
This time the focus is on incident response
Which license is that?
Oh, I get Cybrary through work, so every so often I gotta get access renewed. They don’t want idle accounts, yknow?
Hopefully soon I’ll be getting a fancy schmancy license/cert.

Some questions for the resident gurus.
I’m going to pursue my cybersecurity certification(s) but have one main concern. I live in a small town which doesn’t have much in the way of a tech industry, and I’m also committed here (and like living here) with two teenagers still in high school.
What are my options as an entry-level programmer once I’m certified? Will I be required to relocate to be a serious consideration for employers? Could I freelance (or hybrid) doing entry-level work from home, travelling to be in-house for, say, a week per month?
I suggest you freelance for a while.
With freelancing, you can gain a variety of experiences with different clients in a short period of time and build up a portfolio.
You also get to see if you actually like that line of work and get a sense of whether you’ll be successful in it in the long run.
You might even find yourself shifting to an adjacent role through the types of opportunities that you get exposed to that you might not have been aware of before.
One place you can go to learn more and set up a freelancer profile is Upwork.

Best of luck to you in your new career field!
Hi Mike, I think networking with folks in your local school systems and local government may open a door for you as you grow your skills. That could turn into a position to provide support which is usually a typical first step - a gateway role that gives you exposure. I have many friends that have gone this route, there are local office also that look for tech support so always scan what IT jobs that may open so keep an broad view out for any roles that will get you into a door and get you exposure that will lead to bigger opportunities as you grow your skills. Oh and don’t overlook hospitals as well ![]()
Thank you to you both for your replies and advice. Freelancing is looking like the best option for me. I’ve also been advised that getting the Comptia accreditation is valuable for global freelancing.
