Writing a pipe symbol with a Mac Keyboard in the Lab

Hey everyone,

I got stuck at an exercice where I have to write down a command including a pipe | in the lab (Linux CLI Basics). I am currently working from a Macbook Pro and have absolutely no clue how I could write the pipe symbol in the lab. Could anyone help me?

hi i have the same problem

Greetings! I hope you’re doing well. Could you kindly share a screenshot of where you’re stuck?"

It’s above the return key ( SHIFT \ )

I have recurring nightmares about having to use the virtual labs, mainly due to the difficulty of writing the | chararcter in the labs.

I’m getting varying results - just now i was able to use alt gr + ´ (the key next to backspace), and type in the | several times. But was not able to do it again, and am usually not able to replicate it consistently in the linux virutal labs. It is a great source of frustration not just for me but others as well.

I often have to resort to just copy+pasting the entire commands from the instruction into the machine, which is less than ideal in a learning context.

Typically you will find the pipe symbol above the Enter key on Windows and above the return key on a Mac. It’s used quite a lot in computer science so they tend not to hide it

What keyboard are you using, on what platform (Windows/Linux/Mac) and in what language? Got a picture you can share?
